June 30, 2005 – ITT has received a $478 million order from the U.S. Army's Communications Electronics Command for its SINCGARS tactical radio systems.

This order is for seventy-three thousand radios under the Army's SINCGARS Omnibus Contract awarded to ITT's Communications Systems in November of 2004. That contract supports U.S. and allied military forces worldwide by allowing them to order radios and ancillary items as needed to support frontline troops. Systems ordered by the Army include those used in fighting vehicles and tanks, as well as manpack radios that travel with infantry forces.

SINCGARS systems are deployed globally with soldiers in active duty forces such as the 82nd Airborne Division as well as with National Guard and Reserve forces. They provide voice communications and data routing on the battlefield, allowing soldiers to plan their operations in a totally secure environment.

Four generations of SINCGARS have been deployed to U.S. forces over the past decade. This latest order is for the newest generation radio which includes improved voice and data operations. The total number of SINCGARS deployed worldwide is nearly a quarter-million units. Additional improvements for SINCGARS are currently in development. These include combat identification software that can help to reduce casualties as a result of friendly fire.
