July 27, 2005 – The U.S. Army has ordered additional Near Term Data Radios (NTDR) worth an estimated $4.4 million from ITT. The NTDRs will provide high capacity communications for two newly formed high mobility units used to respond to fast developing combat operations. The Army is also using the NTDR as a backbone communication system between the Army's digitized Tactical Operation Centers, which provide commanders a common picture of the battlefield so they can manage their forces in near real time.

NTDR is a radio system that uses a cellular networking architecture and Internet Protocols to pass data, graphic, and video information while combat forces are on the move. Unlike a cellular telephone system, NTDR does not require large towers or network managers. NTDR automatically forms and reforms networks as soldier requirements change using ad hoc networking technology. Its high data rate and UHF frequency range make it the perfect system for passing large amounts of data across a battlefield. The NTDR is part of the family of wideband radios which include those currently in operation in several European countries, as well as the U.S. and Canada.
